Job Description

Being a chef is a multi-faceted, fast-paced career full of diverse positions. As a chef you will help the kitchen run smoothly and ensure that food is prepared well and on time. You’ll also play a role in quality control, making sure food in storage is rotated and that everything stays at the appropriate temperature. Specific positions include a sous chef, grill or prep cook and a head chef, who is responsible for managing the kitchen. Executive chefs have an even larger role, they help create new menu items and assist in entire menu development.

Education

Small restaurants and franchised chains often offer on-the-job training for cooks. However,attending a culinary degree program is the best to way to become a qualified, highly-trained culinary professionals. Programs range from two to four years. Expect to learn about different styles of cooking, how to use a variety of equipment and gain an extensive knowledge of food preparation.
